In my humble opinion one of the best performances I could find on UA-cam. To name one moment: the way mr. Saraste doesn't forget the violins during the famous Swan-team after two minutes in the third movement, the heart of this symphony. Quite unique.

Kind of off-topic, but I'm curious : some members in the winds have a kind of head-rest device behind their head (I see the 2dn bassoon and the 2nd oboe, maybe others). Does anyone know what it is for ? It seems very flimsy for a head-rest, maybe a partial sound-isolation device for when the brass are in full throttle ?

I think it's shocking that the soloists have to keep their eyes glued to the score ( the tenor largely excluded from this criticism,) as they perform this extremely well-known, often performed classic. I first heard the Requiem in 1964 or '65 performed at NY's Lewison Stadium including Met opera singers Lucine Amara and Richard Tucker and since then many times with many different performing forces. I assure you, it used to be the case that soloists in great works such as the Verdi Requiem would only glance down at their scores from time to time. If by the time of performance you are so uncertain of the very notes and words you are to sing you cannot give the degree of attention to your artistic, your emotional involvement in the interpretation that you ought to.

This movement is faster than usual, but I've been listening to it on repeat for months, and no other speed compares to this, ESPECIALLY the finale!

That symphony... It's so quiet, almost untouchable. Intresting if you consider most of the european romantic music. There is trurely something very Finnish in that one

A difficult symphony to get right. There is always that danger of finding the tempo of floundering, rather than toiling, in that finale. (IMO) -not sure JPS escaped it here. Although, if Sib meant to flounder before clambering out upon the final climax to swing that hammer, then spot on.

This is wonderful!!!! I enjoyed if very much!!!! As it is Sibelius, wonderful composer!!!!, and Finland, wonderful country!!!!

Bravo Maestro for this wonderful concert. Thank a lot for the perfect pronounciation of latin. Nowaday we Heard so manies bad ways to sing in latin and it's catastrophic. The choir, the orchestra and soloist are amazingly excellents. An exceptionnel concert in a mythic cathedral with a perfect acoustic. Bravo.

I love Sibelius. One of the most talented Composers. I like the Performance of Maestro Saraste. This is Finland pure! The Second Movement is absolutely brilliant The guiding theme is so beautiful

Symphonie que j'écoute souvent avec émotion dirigée avec ce grand chef .Le choeur d'hommes est tout simplement poignant ainsi que Lilli Paasikivi etJorma Hynninen.

Magnifique le Lacrymosa. Très belle oeuvre de Berlioz dirigée par le Chef . Le choeur est dynamique et excellent. J'adore et en tant que choriste j'aimerais bien interpréter ce Requiem.

On my to-do list before I leave this earth: Attend a live Berlioz Requiem performance! An amazing work. I've already checked off Mahler Sym. No. 8, but would love to hear it again.

Quelle Oeuvre mais quelle Oeuvre !! Jan Sibelius est avec Maurice Ravel mon compositeur préféré. Toute son oeuvre symphonique est exceptionnelle. Et cet oratorio est simplement magique. Le dernier mouvement est époustouflant. Quelle maîtrise harmonique et mélodique. Sibelius était capable (comme Ravel -> Mvt lent du Cto en sol) de composer de très longues mélodies sans répétitions . La longue mélopée (1:09:56) en est un exemple marquant. Puissante, splendide avant l'explosion finale choeur orchestre alterné. Je n'arrive pas à comprendre que Sibélius ait toujours interdit de rejouer cette oeuvre de son vivant car c'est à mon avis une des plus significative de son chant tellurique, issu des terres et des légendes de Finlande. L'interprétation est magnifique. Le choeur parfait. UN PUR MOMENT DE BONHEUR !
